Ahead of the 2023 general election, the Chairperson Governing Council of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Dr. Salamatu Husseini Suleiman has said the NHRC/CSOs forum is a robust platform for discussing human rights agenda for all aspiring political leaders with a view to holding them accountable before, during and after the elections.

The Chairperson stated this in her opening remarks at the NHRC/CSOs forum in Abuja observed that the forum provides us with a unique opportunity to articulate the outcomes of all the various segments of the discussions into a robust human rights agenda with which to engage candidates in the forthcoming elections and beyond.

The former Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria noted that today we are faced with so many challenges with varying human rights implications and challenges such as torture, inhuman and degrading treatment on citizens by law enforcement personnel.

“There are also skyrocketing cases of sexual and gender based violence in domestic and public places as well as waves of insurgency and terrorism in many parts of Nigeria”, she added.

The Human Rights Advocate therefore commended the efforts of the government and other groups towards addressing these challenges pointing out that there is need to sustain the gains through collective efforts in order to achieve a more sustainable solution to these problems.

In his remarks on the next steps towards improving the human rights situation in the country, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Chief Tony Ojukwu OFR, SAN commended the various stakeholders and partners for their invaluable contributions, saying that the MDAs and other duty bearers should take steps towards addressing the particular concerns that relate to their mandate.

Similarly, he encouraged the CSOs to improve on their collaborations with the Commission saying that they could leverage the 36 state offices of the Commission to implement human rights protection programmes of mutual interest, saying that the Commission has capacity to assist them to reach any government agency on their behalf in the course of their activities.
