JUNE 2025 HUMAN RIGHTS DASHBOARD

June 2025 Human Rights Situation Dashboard: Key Insights
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has presented its June 2025 Human Rights Situation Dashboard, offering critical insights into the state of human rights across Nigeria, with a mid-year overview from January to June 2025. The following insights were highlighted:

In June, the NHRC recorded a 20% increase in complaints compared to May. Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) cases remained prominent, particularly incidents of domestic and sexual violence, with a notable rise in rape cases. Violations of children’s rights were also significant, with child abandonment remaining the most prevalent issue.

The NHRC Observatory recorded a 75% increase in killings across several states, while kidnapping incidents saw a 40% decline. Additional grave concerns documented were suicide, mob action, extra-judicial killings, abuse of office by vigilante officers, and violations against persons with disabilities and children. The right to freedom of movement and association was also undermined, with reports indicating that about 70 travellers were killed during the month. Among the most impacted populations were 200 civilians killed in Yelwata, 40 Civilian Joint Task Force members killed in Zamfara, 65 travellers killed, abducted, or injured, and 76 farmers attacked, threatening the right to food.

From January to June 2025, the South West recorded the lowest number of complaints, while the North Central region reported the highest, attributable in part to the presence of multiple complaint collection points, including the NHRC Headquarters and its Abuja Metropolitan Office. Complaints related to law enforcement abuses dominated, totaling over 358,000 cases. Of the 1,485,307 complaints received during the period, 20,137 were resolved.
