The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in its capacity as Nigeria's National Preventive Mechanism under the Optional Protocol to the United Nations Convention against Torture (OPCAT), has announced the election of its Executive Secretary, Chief Anthony Ojukwu, OFR, SAN, as Vice-President of the African National Preventive Mechanisms Network, ANPMN.

The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Chief Tony Ojukwu, OFR, SAN, has reaffirmed the Commission's strong commitment to continue to prevent torture, protect the dignity of all persons deprived of liberty, and ensure justice and effective remedies for victims of torture in Nigeria.

The National Human Rights Commission has expressed deep concern over the increasing cases of drug abuse and illicit trafficking in Nigeria. The Commission described the trend as a major threat to public health, security, human dignity, and national development.

The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, SAN, OFR, has called for stronger safeguards for women in detention as he chaired a high-level session at the 4th Annual Conference of the African National Preventive Mechanisms Network in Kigali, Rwanda.
